Cat Illnesses - Cataracts
The precise cause of cataracts in cats, like a lot of cat illnesses, is unknown. However genetic predisposition, chemical exposure and physical injury are all thought to contribute to the development of feline cataracts.
Cataracts are one of the cat illnesses that are more likely to develop in older cats. They start as a small milky spot in the pupil, which gradually gets larger and has an effect on the cat's vision.
The only treatment is surgical removal. Like all cat illnesses that require surgical intervention, feline cataracts will only be removed if the vet assesses the cat as a good candidate for surgery i.e. the retina is in good working order and the cat's vision will greatly improve.
