Cat Illnesses - Ear Haematoma

Ear haematoma

This is one of the cat illnesses that will cause the cat a lot of pain. Physical trauma such as a bump, bite or shaking of the head is the most likely cause.

Blood collects between the skin and cartilage of the cat's ear and forms a lump on the cat's ear flap. The cat may exhibit behavioural symptoms including head shaking, scratching and lolling.

The appropriate treatment differs depending on the severity, age and appearance of the haematoma. Show cats will be treated in a manner that minimizes disfiguring, but requires a lot more after care. Antibiotics may also need to be prescribed if the cat's ear is infected.
