Cat Illnesses - Feline Colitis
Feline colitis is an inflammation of the large intestine that can be caused by a wide range of cat problems such as bacterial infection, parasites, allergic reaction, cancer, eating undigestible food or physiological reason. However, in a large number of cases there is no detectable cause.
Cat illnesses such as feline colitis can vary in severity. The least severe cases show no symptoms other than excess mucus and fresh blood in the cat's faeces. Cats suffering from more severe cases may suffer from diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, straining while defaecating (but producing very little) and weight loss.
As with a lot of cat problems, treatment for feline colitis depends on the cause. It may involve anti-parasitic medication, dietary control, antibiotics, steroid treatment, or symptomatic treatment. The only way to find out for sure is to consult a veterinary surgeon.
