Cat Illnesses - Feline Hyperthyroidism

cat suffering from hyperthyroidism

Feline hyperthyroidism is the most common of a range of cat illnesses brought on by hormone imbalances. It is caused by a benign growth of thyroid gland cells and the resulting over-production of thyroid hormones.

The vast majority of cats suffering from this cat illness will lose weight. Other symptoms include increase in appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, increase in activity, poor hair quality and laboured breathing.

There are three different treatments available. A vet will recommend the best one depending on the individual cat's circumstances. The first is oral medication that blocks the effects of thyroid hormone but doesn't stop the growth of thyroid tissue. The second is surgery to remove the growth, and the third is radioactive treatment which is more costly.
