Cat Illnesses - Kidney disease

cross section of diseased kidney

Kidney disease in cats can be caused by other organisms such as bacteria, viruses and parasites, or by other cat illnesses such as cancer, or as a reaction to injury or drugs. However, like a lot of cat problems the most common cause is old age.

Due to the complex and sometimes conflicting symptoms of feline kidney disease, it can be easily mistaken for other cat problems, so it is important to get a diagnosis from a vet. For example a deluge of urine can be one sign, as can a complete cessation of urination. Other symptoms include thirst, loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Treatments can include administering fluids, drugs and/or a special diet. The success of treatment for kidney disease in cats, like most cat illnesses, depends on it being detected and diagnosed early.
