Cat Illnesses - Toxoplasmosis

microscopic view of toxoplasmosis

Toxoplasmosis is a disease caused by a single celled organism that lives in the intestines of cats. Its eggs are passed in the faeces of cats, the only animals to transmit the disease in this manner.

A cat with toxoplasmosis will usually show no symptoms, but if they do they can include diarrhoea, fever, anaemia and eye problems.

The main issue with toxoplasmosis is its effects on unborn humans. It can cause severe abnormalities, so pregnant women should excercise caution around potential sources of toxoplasmosis. Specific drugs are used to treat the disease in cats.
